CAGR Calculator
The only calculator here that assumes nothing at all: every input is something that has already happened, so the answer is a measurement rather than a projection.
What you enter
- Starting value
- Ending value
- Years held
What it tells you
- CAGR
- Total return
- Absolute gain
How this is worked out
CAGR = (ending ÷ starting) ^ (1 ÷ years) − 1. It smooths the whole period into one annual rate.
What it cannot know
- CAGR hides the ride. Two investments with the same CAGR can have had completely different worst years.
- It assumes no money was added or withdrawn in between. If there were cash flows, XIRR is the right measure — the Sansara app computes that on your actual holdings.
Questions
CAGR or absolute return?
Absolute return tells you how much you made in total. CAGR tells you the equivalent steady annual rate, which is the only fair way to compare periods of different lengths.
