Capital Gains Calculator
Short-term gains on listed equity are taxed under s.111A and long-term under s.112A, with a per-financial-year exemption before the long-term rate applies. The rates below come from the same single definition the Sansara app uses.
What you enter
- Total purchase value
- Total sale value
- Days held — More than 365 days makes a listed-equity holding long-term.
- Exemption already used this year — The long-term exemption is per financial year across all your sales, so earlier sales use it up.
What it tells you
- Tax payable
- Capital gain
- Exemption applied
- Taxable gain
- Tax before cess
- Health & education cess
How this is worked out
Held more than 365 days, the gain is long-term: the per-year exemption is applied first and the remainder taxed at the s.112A rate. Held 365 days or fewer, the whole gain is taxed at the s.111A rate. Cess is added on the tax.
What it cannot know
- Surcharge is NOT included. It depends on your total income, which this page does not know.
- This covers listed equity and equity mutual funds. A debt or gold fund is taxed differently, and nothing here can tell which kind a fund is.
- Grandfathering for shares bought on or before 31 January 2018 needs that date’s fair market value, which only you can supply.
- Set-off of losses against other gains is not modelled.
Questions
Where do these rates come from?
From the enacted statutory rates for the financial year shown beside the result. They live in exactly one place in Sansara’s codebase and are generated into this page, so a Budget change cannot update the app and leave this page quietly stating last year’s law.
Why is surcharge missing?
Because computing it needs your total income for the year. Sansara does not hold that, and a tax figure that silently omits a component you might owe is worse than one that names the gap.
